MinimoWednesday Tasting: Gamay!
Gamay is practically synonymous with natural wine. In France, the grape has a reputation for everyday drinking wine--making it a perfect candidate for experimentation because it’s not bogged down in tradition and rules. A light red that’s fruity and spicy, sometimes wild and gamey, sometimes delicate and elegant, it reminds you of Pinot Noir--without the attitude. At minimo it’s one of our favorite varieties in both rosé and red forms. Come see why!
We start in the Vouvray region of the Loire Valley. Mathieu Cosme and Fabien Brutout run Domaine le Facteur together, focusing on elegant pétillant naturel sparkling wines. The vineyard is plowed by horses, and all grapes are harvested by hand. ‘La Bulle du Facteur’ is a sparkling rosé made from a rare parcel of Gamay in a region dominated by Chenin Blanc. Bright aromatics lead into notes of cranberry, strawberry, and saline mineral water. Next we head to Beaujolais, the ancestral home of Gamay. Christian Ducroux’s self-sufficient farm in Régnié has been organic and biodynamic since 1985. His soils are made up of pink granite, famous for producing wines with finesse and subtle minerality. Fermented in cement tanks without added sulfur, ‘Prologue’ has lush fruity and floral aromatics with notes of raspberry, black cherry, orange peel and earthy minerality. Heading back to the Loire Valley, we finish with Christian Venier in the eastern part of Touraine. Christian is a cousin of the famous Puzelat brothers (famous to wine people, anyway), who also make wine in the area and have a similarly natural approach. In 2008, he purchased 14 hectares of vines and revitalized the old cellar in his father's home. He ferments ‘Le Clos des Carteries’ whole-cluster in an open-top vat for 20 days, allowing more oxygen exposure than carbonic fermentations. The result is dense, concentrated fruit with notes of ripe strawberry, blackberry, violets, leather and pepper.
